In an opinion piece by Michael Bacon of Westbrook published in the Portland Press Herald on November 2, Bacon reflects on what he learned while collecting signatures for a campaign to get universal health care on the ballot last year, and what he heard from people he talked with. Most were supportive, he says, but some had questions and concerns. Such as:
“7. My taxes will go up.
It helps to think of deductions for health insurance premiums as taxes that we are already paying. These would be replaced by a tax/premium adjusted to the ability to pay. This would be instead of, not in addition to, what one is paying now.”
