“Why should pleading be necessary? … How can we tolerate being so far behind?”

Two letters to the editor on the subject of universal healthcare appeared in the Portland Press Herald in mid-December.  Dr. Thomas McInerney of Cape Elizabeth explains how our disjointed healthcare system has made the Coronavirus toll worse, closing with a plea for universal healthcare.  Michael Bacon of Westbrook responds, adding that “we (citizens) have a responsibility to ensure that all our citizens are cared for”. He references the MECEP study that Maine AllCare commissioned in 2019, which concludes “that the state’s total health care expenditure would actually decrease.”
