Delene Perley, MA, Secretary
Portland, ME, Term: May 2016 – December 2018 (1)
Delene Perley is a retired Math and Computer Science professor with degrees from the University of Michigan and the College of Wooster in Ohio. She taught for thirty five years, in CT, MI, OH, and CA.
In retirement, Delene coordinates a food pantry in Portland, assists immigrants with English and learning to become citizens, and registers voter at the polls. She chaired a group from the Allen Avenue Unitarian Universalist church in Portland as they designed and presented a worship service about universal healthcare, Who Should Live and Who Should Die? The service has since been repeated for six other churches in the state.
Delene and her late husband Jim (a Biology Professor, President of the AAUP, and former MAC Board member) have two grown children and two grandchildren. One of their adult children, after being laid off from a full time job, could not get health insurance because he is autistic. The only solution at the time was Social Security Disability Insurance and Medicare. The wrongness of his situation inspired their efforts for universal care. As well they experienced such coverage in New Zealand and British Columbia while on sabbatical leaves, convinced of the wisdom in such an approach.
